Dr Matthew Broadhead

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Hip and Knee Reconstruction
Dr Matthew Broadhead is a Fellowship-trained Australian Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in the treatment of disorders of the hip and knee. Dr Broadhead graduated from the University of New South Wales in 2006 and completed his training in Orthopaedic Surgery at hospitals in Australia and the U.S.A to become a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). He is also a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association (FAOrthA).
The main focus of Dr Broadhead’s practice is hip and knee surgery. He has completed further subspecialty training in hip and knee replacement surgery, having completed an AOA Fellowship in Lower Limb Reconstruction at the Prince of Wales Hospital and Sydney Children’s Hospital. Dr Broadhead has experience in treating patients of all ages, including children and the younger, active patient. Dr Broadhead performs total hip replacement through both minimally invasive direct anterior and posterior approaches and total knee replacement with an emphasis on early recovery after surgery. He has completed further training to performed robotic-assisted total knee replacements.
Dr Broadhead is focused on achieving successful outcomes with an evidence-based approach. He
has considerable experience in both clinical and basic science research and was awarded a Master of Surgery (ChM) by the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh for research on ACL reconstruction techniques. Dr Broadhead was a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Scholar and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by the University of Melbourne for studies on bone biology and orthopaedic oncology. He is a Conjoint Lecturer of the University of New South Wales and has been the lead author on numerous peer-reviewed journal articles. He presents his research internationally
Mihai Mitrache
Principal Physiotherapist, Active Physiotherapy and Wellness
Mihai Mitrache is the Principal Physiotherapist at Active Physiotherapy and Wellness. He has a subspecialty interest in hip and knee rehabilitation, with additional experience in chronic pain management.
Mihai was inspired to pursue a career in physiotherapy after him himself required extensive rehabilitation following a football injury at age 15. Mihai went on to complete a Bachelor of Human Kinetics at the University of Windsor, Canada, as well as a Master of Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney.
Mihai has lived and worked on the Mid North Coast for the last 4 years, gaining experience in a variety of clinical settings, including private practice, sports injury clinics, aged care facilities, and hospital programs. Mihai has a keen interest in knee rehabilitation, working with both young athletes, and older patients with chronic pain.
Mihai is available for urgent acute injury assessment and management. He coordinates pre-operative and post-operative assessments for the Mid North Coast Hip and Knee Clinic surgical research and audit program. He will work closely with you to achieve to best possible outcomes following knee ligament reconstruction, as well as hip and knee replacement surgery.
Dr Sridhar Vijayan
Musculoskeletal Physician
Dr Sridhar Vijayan is a Physician with extensive experience in musculoskeletal medicine. He has worked in Trauma & Orthopaedics both in the United Kingdom and Australia. His training has focused particularly on the management of complex fractures, lower limb and shoulder joint reconstruction, lower limb total joint replacement, sports injuries of the knee and hand surgery.
Dr Vijayan completed his undergraduate studies at Barts and The London (United Kingdom) and undertook a basic science degree in Trauma & Orthopaedics from University College London (United Kingdom). He worked as a clinical research fellow at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (Stanmore, UK). He undertook research in cartilage transplantation of the knee, bone tumours and has 14 publications. In Australia he has worked in several tertiary hospitals in the Northern Territory, South Australia and Queensland.
Dr Vijayan aims to provide patients with a comprehensive musculoskeletal assessment, a rapid diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. He has considerable experience in guiding patients through the many treatment options available, with particular skills in both diagnostic and therapeutic injections, including cortisone, PRP and Synvisc.
Dr Su-Yin Yeong
General Practitioner, Chronic Pain and Integrative Medicine
Dr Su-Yin Yeong graduated with a Bachelor of Medical Studies and Doctor of Medicine from the University of New South Wales in 2013. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Dr Yeong has a special interest in preventative medicine, weight management and wellbeing. She has pursued further studies in nutrition and integrative medicine. She works with patients to optimise their general health prior to considering surgery as an option.
Dr Yeong also assists patients in managing chronic pain. She has a particular interest in utilizing medicinal cannabis as an adjunct treatment for a range of disorders including anxiety, chronic pain, and insomnia. Additionally, Dr Yeong has gained qualifications in skin cancer medicine and regularly performs skin checks and minor procedures. Su-Yin also has extensive experience in WorkCover patients and is happy to assist with work-related injuries.
Dr Karen Wong
Consultant Anaesthetist
Dr Karen Wong is an Australian Fellowship-trained Consultant Anaesthetist with a focus on caring for patients undergoing hip and knee replacement surgery. She has a particular interest in regional anaesthesia, keeping patients safe and comfortable during and after their orthopaedic surgery.
Dr Wong graduated from the University of New South Wales in 2006 and then completed specialist training in Anaesthetics through the Prince of Wales Hospital program.
During this time, she spent considerable time at not only the Prince of Wales Hospital, but also Sydney Children’s Hospital, the Royal Hospital for Women, Wollongong Hospital and Coffs Harbour Hospital. Within these diverse clinical environments, she gained experience in both emergency and elective surgery settings, caring for both adult and paediatric patients.
Upon receiving Fellowship from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) in 2014, Dr Wong received further training in regional anaesthesia including bed side cardiac ultrasound and regional nerve blocks. She has been integral in managing the critical care and transfer of high-risk trauma patients and her considerable prior experience at tertiary centres has been invaluable for this reason. She is well positioned to advise high risk patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery.
Dr Angela Suen
Consultant Anaesthetist
Dr Angela Suen is an Australian Fellowship-trained consultant anaesthetist with a particular interest in caring for patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery. She provides empathetic care to patients undergoing hip and knee replacement with the skilled use of regional anaesthetic techniques when appropriate. Dr Suen is experienced at recognising and managing high risk patients undergoing surgery.
Dr Suen completed her training through the Royal North Shore Hospital training scheme, and it was during this time that she obtained considerable skills in managing critical care patients involved in major trauma, burns, spinal injuries and high-risk obstetrics. In addition to caring for both adult and paediatric patients alike, Dr Suen also completed 6 months of training with Careflight as a retrieval Registrar. During this time, she gained considerable experience in the stabilisation and safe transfer of polytraumatised patients.
Upon gaining Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), Dr Suen undertook further training as a Provisional Fellow at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. It was here that she became skilled in the anaesthesia of patients undergoing vascular, ear nose and throat, and neck surgery. She was also a member of the liver transplantation team.
Dr Suen has been responsible for the development and implementation of a range of system improvements for critical care patients. She is a past Director of Anaesthesia, ANZCA supervisor for vascular anaesthesia, Coffs Harbour Health Campus. With her substantial experience, Dr Suen has undertaken a Master of Clinical Medicine in the fields of health leadership and management.
